After moving from a quiet and
un-happening town in Kerala to Chennai, I was quite upset and down that there
are not many places to be in Chennai, where I could spend some time alone and
introspect the meaning of life without being under the scanner of strangers. I
had a notion that being a socially awkward introvert is really going to be hard
in a bustling city like this one.
But, guess what? “Singara Chennai”
had other plans for me. Closely alive with spirited vibes in every corner, the
city also has few not-so-mainstream spots where one could unwind without giving
a damn about what is really happening around. This blog is to help all my
fellow homo-sapiens who feel and experience life as I do. It is high time to
take our stand and propagate our un-sung vibes of life in these quaint nice
corners of the city.
After moving into a flats in Tambaram, Chennai last year, I spent most of my free time (which is all the
time) reading, gaming, and binge-watching Netflix series all day long. I
couldn’t resist the feeling of walls closing in and crushing my sense of liberation
while inside the cluttered and unorganized room. I had to step out and with
doubts and fears, I did.
Here are the list of things and
places to go for insecure spirits who crave for a “lone” time:
Trek at Perungalathur hills:
Located near Tambaram, these hills
are nowhere close to the Ghats or the rocky terrains of the Himalayas, but it
has its own charm. Much of my adventure was derived from the journey alone, to
this place. Taking a yellow-black tuk-tuk from my apartment, I seemed to
embrace the shaky ride from my home to the hill.
The road leading up to the top of the
hill is concrete-laid and you could almost lose yourself at this place. It is
advisable to hike up this hill during mornings and evenings when the sun doesn’t
shine much.
Sunrise at one of the side beaches in ECR:
The East Coast Road, gem of the
coastal line in Chennai city is studded with busy and happening beaches. But
there are spots which are not frequented by noisy visitors at most of the time.
Side beaches start from Kovalam and they stretch till Mahabalipuram.
Adventurous as they are, these spots look shady, yes, but it is a risk worth
taking if you want to witness a gorgeous east-coastal sunrise in the morning. Covers
of green pine forest along the stretch are considered a little unsafe at times,
but I don’t think that is going to stop anyone of us in anyway.
Picnic at Chemberambakkam Lake:
Situated closer to Poonamalle and
west of the Bangalore Highways, this sprawling lake is a stunning water body to
spend an evening. The sun sets just in the backdrop of this lake for a
beautiful orange hue during summer season. One could even find squadron of
pelicans during the winter season. Besides all this, the lake also has an
intake tower which looks like some weird Chinese monument set in the outskirts
of Chennai. It is highly advisable to buy some munchies and a water bottle
before you get to this place.
Weekdays at the museum:
The Chennai Egmore museum is the
second oldest museum in the country and the privilege that it has behind its
name is almost ignored blatantly. Constructed in cool Indo-Saracenic style, the
museum has the National Art gallery inside with the works of great Indian
artist like Raja Ravi Varma and it also has the most collections of Roman
Antiques outside of Europe. One could go on a ride to the past just walking
through the halls of the museum.
A day at Anna Centenary Library:
A boon for all the bibliophiles in
the city, this library is seldom frequented by visitors. Covering 7 sections
and 7 floors, the library has a collection of 550,000 books for you to refer
and read. Silent in ambiance and a perfect corner for a reading session in a
single sitting, the library soothes the soul of bookworms and learning students
alike. There is also a section where you could bring your own book and sit down
and read.
