8 Common Feng Shui Mistakes to Avoid at Home

A house turns into a home only after it is adapted and transformed to exude the taste and expression of the people living in it. While personalizing the same, people tend to style it with many approaches, spiritual and aesthetical. Practices of Feng Shui and Vastu are incorporated into the space to enhance the energy revolving around the place.

With this trend catching up, people are open to experimentation and they look to improve the energy of the living space for a better life, career, health, and relationship. In Feng Shui, “Chi” is the energy that they try to attract and the orientations of home elements focus only on concentrating this energy into the home.

We tend to create a space that is alluring to look at and we ignore the importance of attracting positive energy and repelling the bad ones. Our planning efforts are focussed only on the aesthetical aspects and the spiritual aspect is seldom considered for attention.

In this article, let us look at the common mistakes that we make that should be avoided according to the Feng Shui principles and philosophy, so as to create a space that drives away the negative energy and gives space for the positive ones to come in.

Ignoring the placement and direction of furniture:

Sofas in the living room and chairs should not be placed with their backs against the windows or doors of the home. Likewise, in the bedroom, the back of the bed should not be inappropriately placed against the windows or the door. Opting for a minimalistic approach and placing them in such a way to encourage a free flow of positive energy is good for the home. For instance, in my apartments in Pallavaram Radial Road, only limited furniture are used so as to allow the energy to flow through without any hindrance.

Dull entrances and hallways:

Doors in black color are believed to bring in bad luck and energy into the living space. Similarly, dark black paint in the living room should also be avoided. Instead of using black, dark shades of brown or grey can be used. Dull lighting in the living space should be replaced with bright lighting. Entry to the home should be guided by a pleasing lighting setup.

Cluttering the space is bad:

Unnecessary and dysfunctional articles at home are bad according to Feng Shui principles. Allowing soiled dishes to dry and pile up in the sink is also considered a bad practice. Likewise, the laundry basket should also be constantly cleared and not allowed to pile up. De-cluttering the spaces like closets and cabinets at home from time to time is necessary.

Wrong placement of mirrors:

Orientation of mirrors is often ignored in a home. Mirrors should not be placed near the front entrance door of the home or closer to the bed. Placing a mirror by facing another mirror is also believed to keep negative energy. Mirrors should be placed in such a way that it reflects the outdoors, preferably facing a window.

Off-putting artworks:

There are people who love to adorn their home with artworks and sculptures. Appealing as they might be, negative artworks that express sorrow and misery should be avoided. Home shouldn’t have sculptures and paintings of death, war, and other sad artistic elements.

Broken dishes:

Broken plates, chipped glass mugs, and cracked bowls coordinate with the troubles in life. These articles should be substituted with new ones. These components at home symbolize the well being and wealth of the family and they should not be disregarded.
Flawed plumbing is a no:

Damages to the drainage system and leakages because of the same should be noticed and taken care of. A bad plumbing system is bad for the residents’ hygiene and it is also believed to affect the energy in the home.

Wilted and inappropriate plants:

Plants that are dead with wilted flowers are believed to let out negative energy and induce bad luck to the home. Plants that are prickly like cactus should be avoided, but roses are an exception. Keeping artificial plants is also not a good idea. Choosing natural and vibrant plants is good for the home and they are believed to attract positive energy.
